What is a Bonsai?
The name Bonsai derives from the Japanese language meaning plantings in tray or low-seeded pot for "Bon" and a planting or plantings for "sai". Bonsai is a Japanese art form using miniature trees grown in a container. Similar practices exist in other cultures, including the Chinese tradition of Penjing from which the art form originated. This Japanese tradition has evolved over a thousand years.
What kinds of trees can be used for a Bonsai?
Many kinds of trees, shrubs and plants can be made into Bonsai. Creating one is not as hard as you think! Trees can be anywhere from 6 inches to 3 feet tall. Bonsai are created by understanding the basic bonsai shapes and traditional styles. Branches are reshaped by using wiring and pruning to create an aged look.
